Looking at a kelp forest from above, while not being in the water, one can be forgiven for thinking that a kelp forest is nothing special. However, upon getting into the water and seeing these forests under water, you will be amazed at how beautiful they are!
Kelp forests are recognized as one of the most productive and dynamic ecosystems on Earth! When one swims between them, you will find loads of little fish, crabs, and other sea animals hiding in there.
Kelp can grow up to 30 meters plus, which means looking down into them is like looking down into a forest!
The kelp moves from side to side with the water, and this, plus the light streaming through between the gaps in the kelp, really creates a magical scene! These kelp forests are a destination on their own – any snorkeler who spends time exploring these forests is bound to discover a new underwater world!
There are many different species of kelp. One of these species can grow up to 60cm per day! Kelp also can be found in your toothpaste, and is also used to make anti-acids.
Go explore these underwater wonderlands – it’s not something to miss out on!
The kelp forest snorkeling happens from the beach. We have a couple of secluded, well-protected sites that we use. In these areas, the sea is normally calm, which allows us to lie on the top of the water, and to explore at our leisure. The snorkel guides are also equipped with a floating buoy, to make sure the boat traffic does not come to close.
We start the day at the shop at Into the Blue’s shop in Sea Point, Cape Town, where we select wet suits that fit you. From here, we go on a short ride to the snorkeling site. Our snorkel sites are season specific, so chances are that in summer the road trip is shorter (about 20 minutes), while in winter it’s a bit further (around 1 hour).
Upon arrival at the snorkeling site, your PADI certified divemaster will give you a snorkel briefing. Here they will run over snorkel techniques (if you are unfamiliar with it), and also help you to get into your wetsuits.
The snorkeling part of the excursion is approximately 1 hour, which allows you ample time to explore and see amazing things!
After getting out of the water, you'll change back into your normal clothes again, and then we'll drop you off at your hotel.
